Reading Response: Lopate

I liked the use of the phrase “turn yourself into a character” because that's exactly what my English teacher told me to do when I asked her for suggestions on writing my college personal statement. She told me I needed to write in the third person first and then to convert everything to first person after the fact. I think I can try to use a similar technique when writing future personal essays. By detaching myself from the character version of myself, I can be more vulnerable.

I also think I will incorporate more “conflict” into my writing. I have been trying to be more blunt and honest while writing, but I do suffer with what the author describes as shame. I think I can work on self-curiosity to improve my writing and make it more true to my inner-voice. Using this voice will make my Zuihitsu essay feel more authentic.
