Reading Response: Haircut
I wasn’t expecting an essay on haircuts abroad to have such a positive tone. I have heard some horror stories when people try to get haircuts in countries they are unfamiliar with, but this story only had positive things to say about both the haircut and the barber. The author did not directly describe the barber’s personal qualities, but the barber comes across as delightful in the dialogue and the author’s description of his impact. The small details the author included, such as Michael pulling up Google Earth or the suspected tequila, kept me engaged throughout the story. I appreciated the humor included, but I especially liked the messages scattered throughout the story. Michael didn’t just share life advice but also profoundly impacted the author and his future career aspirations.
The author concluded the story with multiple paragraphs on the lessons he learned from Michael. My favorite, and what resonated with me the most, was the lesson on loving the people you surround yourself with. Life is so much better when you have people supporting you and people for you to support.
