Reading Response: Encountering Zuihitsu

Which fragment(s) by Kenko speaks to you and why? Describe what it is like to experience juxtapositions between sections. How might this style of composition help you capture the experience of study abroad?

I thought it was somewhat ironic that in 13 Kenko was speaking about the joys of sitting with a book beneath a lamp which is exactly what I was doing while reading that line. I read the fragments while sitting at a desk in Radcam with a small reading light over my screen.

Fragment 15 also resonated with me because I think I have found myself appreciating art more since I have been in Oxford. I have been listening to much more classical music than usual, going to museums, and I have enjoyed all the architecture around. Rather than taking a retreat at a shrine or temple, I find myself at a library every day.

Some texts felt short and uncomplicated (127 for example) while others were long stories and made me think about their posed questions (188 for example). I think the definition of “following the brush” fits the collection of fragments I read well. They didn’t feel disjointed, but they varied drastically from one another.

I think studying abroad is complicated and varied just like Zuihitsu. Through this form of composition, it will allow us to bring about more of the experience of study abroad through a creative point of view. We can utilize other forms of expression rather than just prose (poems, art, etc.)
