Script Draft:
Hello everyone! My name is Melia, and I am from Boston, Massachusetts. Currently, I plan on pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. I am in Dr. Lux’s English 1101 class which focuses on travel and personal essays.
Throughout life, my fears have changed. I went from fears of the dark to fears of other people. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more self-conscious and developed nerves while public speaking.
It hasn’t always been this way. When I was younger, I would sing, dance, act, and perform in public without worrying about what others would think of me. I still love to do the same things, but I sing in choirs and dance with friends.
I’ve been working on these fears for the last few years, and while I have significantly improved, my oral communication skills still need some work. Recently, I was at a friend's graduation party and was asked to give a speech in front of 100 people I did not know. Not only did I have to improvise quickly, but I had to face one of my biggest fears. While it was not perfect, I knew that even giving the speech was a tremendous improvement for me.
While I am trying to speak clearly and slowly in this video, one of my biggest challenges is that I start talking quickly and stumble over my words when I talk publicly due to nerves. Hopefully, throughout this class and my time at Georgia Tech, I will continue to improve by challenging myself and practicing.
Thank you
